Description

Apple Spiced Waffles are a comforting and flavorful twist on the classic waffle. By incorporating warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, along with grated apples, these waffles offer a delightful balance of sweetness and spice. Whether you’re craving a cozy breakfast on a chilly morning or looking for a special treat to serve at a weekend brunch, these waffles are the perfect choice. The addition of apples gives these waffles a fresh, fruity undertone that pairs wonderfully with the warm spices.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Waffles:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups (420ml) milk (or buttermilk for extra fluffiness)
  • 1/3 cup (75ml) unsalted butter, melted (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup peeled and grated apple (about 1 large apple)

For the Topping (Optional):

  • Warm maple syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Sliced apples or sautéed cinnamon apples
  • Chopped nuts (e.g., pecans or walnuts)

Instructions

1. Preheat the Waffle Iron:

  • Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves (if using), and salt.

3. Mix the Wet Ingredients:

  • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.

4. Combine the Wet and Dry Ingredients:

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined (don’t overmix; a few lumps are okay).
  • Fold in the grated apple gently.

5. Cook the Waffles:

  • Lightly grease the waffle iron with non-stick spray or butter.
  • Pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron (amount depends on your waffle maker) and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.

6. Serve:

  • Serve the waffles warm with your favorite toppings, such as warm maple syrup, whipped cream, sliced apples, or sautéed cinnamon apples.

Notes

Top with warm maple syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or caramelized apples for extra flavor. They’re also delicious with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla yogurt.
