Chickpea Flour Pancakes Recipe: A Gluten-Free Delight

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Diet: Vegan

Description

Chickpea flour pancakes are a popular dish in many parts of the world. Made from chickpea flour (besan), these pancakes are naturally gluten-free, making them an ideal choice for individuals with gluten sensitivities or those on a gluten-free diet. The flour gives the pancakes a unique nutty flavor, which pairs beautifully with a wide range of savory or sweet toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup chickpea flour (also called gram flour or besan)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (optional, for flavor and color)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds or ground cumin (optional, for savory pancakes)
  • 1/2 cup water (add more if needed for consistency)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs (like cilantro, parsley, or spinach) – optional
  • 1 small chili, finely chopped (optional, for a spicy kick)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped vegetables (like onions, tomatoes, or bell peppers) – optional
  • Oil or butter for cooking

Instructions

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the chickpea flour, baking powder, salt, turmeric, and cumin (if using).
  2. Add the Wet Ingredients
Gradually add water while whisking to form a smooth, lump-free batter. The batter should be pourable but not too runny (similar to pancake batter).
  3. Add Optional Ingredients
Stir in the chopped herbs, chili, and vegetables, if desired.
  4. Heat the Pan
Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Lightly grease the pan with oil or butter.
  5. Cook the Pancakes
    • Pour a ladleful of batter onto the pan and spread it gently into a circle.
    • Cook for 2-3 minutes until bubbles form on the surface and the edges lift slightly.
    • Flip the pancake and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Serve
Serve warm with your choice of toppings or dips. For savory pancakes, pair with chutney, yogurt, or avocado. For sweet pancakes, drizzle with honey, maple syrup, or nut butter.

Notes

These savory pancakes are naturally gluten-free and packed with plant-based protein. Serve them with yogurt, chutney, or a side salad for a wholesome meal. You can also add grated veggies or herbs to the batter for extra flavor and nutrition.
