Description

Churros are fried dough pastries that originated in Spain and have become popular all around the world, especially in Latin America. They have a crispy, golden exterior with a soft and tender interior. Traditionally, churros are served with hot chocolate or chocolate dipping sauce, making them the ultimate indulgent treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying (enough for deep frying)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for coating)

For the Chocolate Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, adjust based on sweetness preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Making the Churros:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a saucepan, combine water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, salt, and vegetable oil. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
    • Once boiling, remove from heat and stir in the flour and vanilla extract until a dough forms.
  2. Heat the Oil:
    • In a deep frying pan, heat oil over medium heat (about 350°F or 175°C).
  3. Pipe the Churros:
    • Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.
    • Pipe strips of dough (about 4-6 inches long) into the hot oil, cutting them with scissors. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  4. Coat the Churros:
    • Remove the churros from the oil and drain on paper towels.
    • Mix 1/2 cup sugar with cinnamon in a bowl and roll the churros in the mixture while they are still warm.

Making the Chocolate Dipping Sauce:

  1. Heat the Cream:
    • In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
  2. Add Chocolate:
    • Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips. Stir until smooth and fully melted.
  3. Add Sugar and Vanilla:
    • If desired, stir in sugar and vanilla extract for extra flavor.

Serving

  • Serve the churros warm with the chocolate dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

For an extra twist, try rolling your freshly fried churros in a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar for deeper flavor. Want to elevate the chocolate sauce? Add a pinch of sea salt or a splash of espresso for richness. Serve warm and enjoy with coffee or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate indulgence!
