Creamy Jalapeño Poppers with Greek Yogurt

The Ultimate Guide to Creamy Jalapeño Poppers with Greek Yogurt: A Healthier Twist on the Classic Appetizer

  • Author: David Andersson

  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Creamy jalapeño poppers with Greek yogurt represent an innovative evolution of the traditional stuffed pepper appetizer. Unlike conventional poppers that rely heavily on cream cheese and mayonnaise-based fillings, this healthier version incorporates Greek yogurt as a primary ingredient, creating a lighter yet equally satisfying experience.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Jalapeños:

  • 1215 large fresh jalapeño peppers
  • Olive oil spray or brush

For the Greek Yogurt Filling:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
  • 3 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Optional Bacon Addition:

  • 6 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled

Instructions

Prepare the Jalapeños:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  2. Cut jalapeños – Slice each jalapeño in half lengthwise, keeping stems intact if desired
  3. Remove seeds – Use a small spoon or knife to scrape out seeds and white membranes (wear gloves!)
  4. Pat dry – Thoroughly dry jalapeño halves with paper towels

Make the Greek Yogurt Filling:

  1. Drain yogurt – Place Greek yogurt in fine-mesh strainer for 15 minutes to remove excess liquid
  2. Mix base – In a large bowl, combine drained Greek yogurt and softened cream cheese until smooth
  3. Add cheeses – Fold in cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses
  4. Season – Add green onions, garlic, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne (if using), salt, and pepper
  5. Taste and adjust – Add more seasoning as needed
  6. Add bacon – If using, fold in crumbled bacon

Prepare the Topping:

  1. Combine ingredients – In a small bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, and garlic powder
  2. Season – Add a pinch of salt and pepper

Assemble and Bake:

  1. Fill jalapeños – Using a small spoon, generously fill each jalapeño half with the Greek yogurt mixture
  2. Top with crumbs – Sprinkle breadcrumb mixture over each filled jalapeño
  3. Spray with oil – Lightly spray tops with olive oil for golden browning
  4. Bake – Place in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until tops are golden and jalapeños are tender
  5. Cool slightly – Let rest for 5 minutes before serving
  6. Garnish – Sprinkle with fresh cilantro

Notes

Lightened-Up Tip:
Using Greek yogurt gives these poppers a creamy texture with a healthy twist—more protein and less fat than traditional cream cheese. Serve them hot with a squeeze of lime or a side of salsa for an extra flavor boost. Great for game day, parties, or a spicy snack!
