Description
To understand the appeal of a Smashed Croissant Breakfast Sandwich, you first have to appreciate the chemistry of a croissant. A standard croissant is made of laminated dough, which means layers of butter are folded into the dough repeatedly. When baked, the water in the butter turns to steam, puffing the layers up.
Ingredients
4 large croissants (day-old works great)
4 large eggs
4 breakfast sausage patties (or bacon/ham)
4 slices cheddar, American, or Swiss cheese
2–3 tbsp butter (divided)
Salt & black pepper, to taste
Optional add-ins
Caramelized onions
Sliced avocado
Hot sauce or sriracha
Everything bagel seasoning
Instructions
Prep the Croissants
Slice croissants in half horizontally.
Lightly butter the cut sides.
Smash & Toast
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Place croissants cut-side down.
Press firmly with a spatula or another pan to flatten.
Cook 2–3 minutes until deeply golden and crispy. Remove and set aside.
Cook the Meat
In the same pan, cook sausage patties until browned and cooked through.
Remove and keep warm.
Eggs
Melt a little butter in the pan.
Crack eggs in and cook to your preference (over-easy works best).
Season with salt and pepper.
Assemble the Smash
Place a croissant bottom in the skillet.
Add sausage, egg, and cheese.
Top with croissant lid.
Press down firmly and cook 1–2 minutes per side until cheese melts and everything is crispy.
Serve
Slice in half and serve hot. Add hot sauce or avocado if desired.
Notes
These smashed croissant breakfast sandwiches are best enjoyed hot off the pan, when the croissant edges are extra crispy and the center stays buttery and soft. Perfect for slow mornings, brunch with friends, or whenever you want something a little indulgent to start the day.
