  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A Black Forest Trifle is a layered dessert that takes inspiration from the famous Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte) of Germany. Instead of painstakingly assembling a cake with multiple baked layers, the trifle simplifies the process by layering crumbled chocolate cake, cherry filling, chocolate pudding, and whipped cream in a transparent dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box Devil’s Food Cake mix (or homemade chocolate cake)
  • 1 box instant chocolate pudding (5.9 oz), prepared
  • 1 can cherry pie filling (21 oz)
  • 3 cups whipped cream (store-bought or homemade)
  • Optional: Kirsch or cherry liqueur for brushing cake layers
  • Chocolate shavings & fresh cherries, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Bake the cake:
    • Prepare Devil’s Food Cake according to package directions.
    • Let cool completely, then crumble into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Prepare pudding:
    • Make chocolate pudding as directed on the box.
    • Chill until thickened.
  3. Layer the trifle:
    • In a large trifle dish, layer as follows:
      • Crumbled cake
      • Cherry pie filling
      • Chocolate pudding
      • Whipped cream
    • Repeat layers until ingredients are used up.
  4. Garnish:
    • Top with chocolate shavings and fresh cherries.
    • Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

This Black Forest Trifle is a show-stopping dessert that layers rich chocolate, cherries, and cream for a crowd-pleasing treat. For extra indulgence, drizzle a little cherry liqueur over the cake layer or top with chocolate curls before serving. Best made a few hours ahead so the flavors can meld together beautifully.
