A Taste of Autumn: The Ultimate Dill Pretzels with Cider Cheese Dip Recipe

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 pretzels with dip 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

While the specific combination of dill pretzels and cider cheese dip is a modern culinary innovation, its roots lie in centuries of tradition. Pretzels have a rich history, believed to have originated in Europe as far back as the 7th century, when monks would bake them as a reward for children who learned their prayers. The pretzel’s iconic twisted shape is said to represent arms crossed in prayer. Over time, they evolved from a religious symbol to a beloved street food and snack, especially in Germany and the United States. The practice of boiling pretzels in a baking soda solution before baking is a classic technique that gives them their distinct, golden-brown crust and chewy interior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g bread flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 300ml warm water
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill
  • 1 tbsp baking soda (for boiling)
  • Flaky sea salt, for topping

Instructions

  • Mix & knead: Combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Add warm water and oil, knead until smooth. Fold in dill.
  • Rise: Cover and let rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  • Shape: Divide into 8 pieces, roll into ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
  • Boil: Boil each pretzel in water with baking soda for 30 seconds.
  • Bake: Place on a lined tray, sprinkle with flaky salt, and bake at 220°C for 12–15 mins until deep golden brown.

Notes

These soft dill pretzels pair beautifully with the tangy cider cheese dip, making them perfect for game nights, parties, or cozy snacking. For extra flavor, try brushing the pretzels with garlic butter after baking or sprinkling them with flaky sea salt. The cider cheese dip also works great as a sauce for roasted veggies or spread on sandwiches.
