Description
Basic soft pretzels are an iconic snack known for their chewy interior and golden-brown, slightly crisp exterior. Unlike the crunchy pretzels you might find in bags at the store, soft pretzels are made with a dough that undergoes a special water bath step, giving them that signature chewy texture. They are traditionally shaped into knots, but you can also make them into sticks or any other fun shape you like. Often, they are topped with coarse salt, but they are also versatile enough to be paired with a variety of dips like mustard, cheese sauce, or even a sweet option like honey butter.
Ingredients
- Warm water – 1 ½ cups
- Active dry yeast – 2 ¼ teaspoons
- Brown sugar – 3 tablespoons
- Melted butter – 2 tablespoons
- Salt – 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour – 2 ¼ cups
- Baking soda – ¼ cup (for the water bath)
- Warm water – 3–4 cups (for the water bath)
- Egg – 1 (for egg wash)
- Coarse salt – for sprinkling
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, whisk together warm water, yeast, brown sugar, melted butter, and salt. Stir in the flour until a dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer to a floured surface and knead 10–15 times until smooth.
- Let It Rise: Place the dough in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise for about an hour.
- Shape the Pretzels: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 6–8 sections. Roll each section into a long rope and shape into pretzels.
- Prepare the Baking Soda Bath: Mix baking soda into warm water and dip each pretzel into the solution. This step gives them their signature chewy texture.
- Bake: Brush the pretzels with beaten egg, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake at 450°F (230°C) for 10–12 minutes until golden brown
Notes
These soft pretzels are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, warm and golden brown. You can get creative with toppings too—try sprinkling with sesame seeds, garlic powder, cinnamon sugar, or even shredded cheese before baking. For extra flavor, serve with mustard, cheese sauce, or your favorite dip. Want to make them ahead? You can freeze the shaped dough before boiling, then bake fresh anytime. Happy baking!
