Matcha Green Tea Panna Cotta Recipe: A Creamy Delight with a Touch of Elegance

  • Author: David Andersson

Description

Matcha Green Tea Panna Cotta is a refined twist on the classic Italian dessert, panna cotta, infused with matcha green tea powder. Traditionally, panna cotta is made with heavy cream, sugar, and gelatin, resulting in a smooth, silky texture. By incorporating matcha, a powdered green tea made from finely ground tea leaves, we enhance the flavor with its unique, slightly bitter and grassy taste. This dessert is not only visually striking but also rich in antioxidants due to the matcha.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder (use high-quality matcha for the best flavor)

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 teaspoons powdered gelatin

  • 2 tablespoons warm water

Instructions

Step 1: Bloom the Gelatin

Start by blooming the gelatin. In a small bowl, sprinkle 2 teaspoons of powdered gelatin over 2 tablespoons of warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the gelatin softens and absorbs the water. This step is crucial because it allows the gelatin to dissolve more easily later.

Step 2: Heat the Mixture

While the gelatin is blooming, grab a medium-sized saucepan and combine 1 cup of heavy cream, 1 cup of whole milk, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 tablespoon of matcha green tea powder. Whisk the ingredients together until the matcha powder is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, making sure not to bring it to a boil. Stir occasionally to ensure it doesn’t scorch at the bottom.

Step 3: Incorporate Gelatin

Once the milk-cream mixture is warm, remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the bloomed gelatin and whisk until it is completely dissolved. This will ensure that your panna cotta sets perfectly. If you notice any lumps of gelatin, simply keep stirring until everything is dissolved and smooth.

Step 4: Add Vanilla Extract

Next, stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for a subtle flavor enhancement. This adds a lovely aromatic sweetness to balance the earthiness of the matcha.

Step 5: Strain and Pour

To avoid any potential lumps or clumps of matcha powder, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve. This step will help ensure that the final panna cotta is velvety smooth. Once strained, carefully pour the mixture into your serving glasses or molds.

Step 6: Chill the Panna Cotta

Now, let’s give your panna cotta time to set. Cover the glasses or molds with plastic wrap or a lid and place them in the refrigerator. Let them chill for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight, to ensure they firm up to the perfect consistency.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

Once the panna cotta has set, it’s time to serve! You can garnish your panna cotta with fresh berries, whipped cream, or even a dusting of additional matcha powder for an extra touch of green tea goodness. Serve it chilled, and enjoy the delicate, creamy texture along with the subtle flavor of matcha.

Notes

For an elegant presentation, top with a dusting of matcha powder, fresh berries, or a drizzle of honey. This light and creamy dessert pairs beautifully with green tea or jasmine tea for a soothing end to any meal.
