Orange Poppy Seed Yogurt Cake: A Perfect Balance of Citrus and Texture

  • Author: David Andersson

Description

This Orange Poppy Seed Yogurt Cake is a moist, fluffy, and zesty loaf cake that combines the tang of orange with the creamy richness of yogurt. The poppy seeds add a slight crunch and a touch of elegance to the texture. The yogurt, acting as a key wet ingredient, enhances the moisture and makes each bite light and tender. What makes this cake particularly special is the fresh, citrusy orange flavor that comes from both orange juice and zest, paired with the richness of yogurt, creating an unforgettable flavor profile.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry:

  • 1½ cups (190 g) all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp poppy seeds

  • 1½ tsp baking powder

  • ¼ tsp baking soda

  • ¼ tsp salt

Wet:

  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar

  • Zest of 2 oranges

  • ½ cup (120 ml) plain Greek yogurt (or regular yogurt)

  • ½ cup (120 ml) freshly squeezed orange juice

  • ½ cup (120 ml) neutral oil (like canola or sunflower)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional glaze:

  • ½ cup (60 g) powdered sugar

  • 1–2 tbsp orange juice

Instructions

  • Preheat oven:
To 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan (or line with parchment paper).

  • Infuse the sugar:
In a large bowl, rub the orange zest into the sugar with your fingertips — this releases the oils and boosts flavor.

  • Mix wet ingredients:
Add yogurt, orange juice, oil, eggs, and vanilla to the sugar mixture. Whisk until smooth and combined.

  • Combine dry ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk together flour, poppy seeds, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  • Make the batter:
Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined — do not overmix.

  • Bake:
Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Cool and glaze (optional):
Let cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack.
Whisk powdered sugar and orange juice to make a glaze and drizzle over the cooled cake.

Notes

This Orange Poppy Seed Yogurt Cake is light, moist, and bursting with citrus flavor. Perfect for brunch, tea time, or a light dessert! You can dust it with powdered sugar, drizzle with an orange glaze, or serve with a dollop of whipped cream or Greek yogurt for an extra touch of indulgence.
