  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 20 minutes

Description

Spicy Thai Basil Beef Stir-Fry, also known as “Pad Krapow Moo,” is a classic Thai dish typically made with ground pork or beef, Thai basil, and an assortment of aromatic ingredients. The combination of fresh Thai basil and spicy chilies delivers a punch of flavor, while the soy and fish sauces provide the perfect umami balance. The dish is often served with steamed jasmine rice and topped with a fried egg, making it a staple in Thai street food culture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (or thinly sliced steak)
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 Thai chilies, finely chopped (adjust for spice level)
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp black soy sauce (for deeper color)
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
  • ½ red bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • Steamed jasmine rice, for serving
  • Fried egg, for topping (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the aromatics: Heat oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and chilies, stirring until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  • Cook the beef: Add ground beef and stir-fry until browned and cooked through (about 3-4 minutes).
  • Add the sauce: Stir in oyster sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, and black soy sauce. Mix well to coat the beef evenly.
  • Finish with basil: Toss in Thai basil leaves and sliced bell pepper. Stir-fry for another 30 seconds until basil is wilted.
  • Serve: Spoon over steamed jasmine rice and top with a crispy fried egg for an authentic touch.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, feel free to add a splash of fish sauce or a squeeze of lime juice just before serving. You can also substitute beef with chicken, tofu, or mushrooms for a different twist. Serve it with jasmine rice or sticky rice for the most authentic experience!
