Description
Valentine’s Day Red Velvet Heart-Shaped Scones are a delightful take on traditional scones. These scones stand out because they feature the signature deep red color and cocoa flavor of red velvet cake. The buttery, slightly sweet scone base is complemented by a luscious cream cheese glaze, making them both visually appealing and delicious. The heart shape adds an extra touch of romance, perfect for this special holiday.
Ingredients
For the scones:
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
¾ cup heavy cream, plus extra for brushing
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1–2 teaspoons red food coloring (gel works best)
Optional mix-ins:
½ cup white chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips
🍰 For the Cream Cheese Glaze
2 ounces cream cheese, softened
½ cup powdered sugar
1–2 tablespoons milk or cream
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat oven:
Set to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix dry ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in butter:
Add cold butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to work it in until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
Mix wet ingredients:
In a small bowl, whisk cream, egg, vanilla, and red food coloring together until evenly tinted.
Combine:
Pour wet mixture into dry ingredients and stir gently until dough just comes together.
If using chocolate chips, fold them in now.
Dough should be slightly sticky — if too dry, add a tablespoon more cream.
Shape the scones:
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat into a ¾-inch-thick circle.
Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out scones and place on prepared baking sheet.
Bake:
Brush tops lightly with cream.
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until tops are set and slightly puffed.
Cool on a wire rack.
Make the glaze:
Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until smooth. Adjust consistency as desired.
Drizzle & serve:
Drizzle glaze over cooled scones or spread it for a more frosted look.
Decorate with heart sprinkles, white chocolate drizzle, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
Notes
These delightful scones are perfect for a romantic breakfast or a sweet treat to share with loved ones. Serve warm with a dollop of cream or a drizzle of white chocolate for an extra touch of love!”
