Description
To put it plainly, this dish is a creative, bite-sized reinvention of traditional Italian-American pizza craftsmanship. Instead of baking your ingredients flat on a round stone, you roll a thin layer of yeast dough, savory tomato sauce, rich cheese, and premium beef pepperoni into a tightly wrapped cylinder before slicing it into individual portions. This specific method ensures that every single piece contains a perfectly uniform distribution of meat, sauce, and cheese, wrapped in an elegant spiral pattern.
Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 lb (450 g) pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for rolling)
For the Filling
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 20–24 slices beef pepperoni
- 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
For the Hot Honey
- ¼ cup honey
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes
- ½ tsp apple cider vinegar
For Brushing
- 1 tbsp melted butter
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- In a small saucepan, gently warm the honey with the red pepper flakes and apple cider vinegar for 2–3 minutes. Set aside to infuse.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a rectangle about 10 × 14 inches (25 × 35 cm).
- Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a ½-inch border around the edges.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the sauce, then arrange the beef pepperoni slices evenly on top.
- Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes if using.
- Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log and pinch the seam closed.
- Slice the log into 10–12 equal pinwheels and place them cut-side up on the prepared baking tray.
- Brush the tops with melted butter mixed with garlic powder.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the pinwheels are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Let cool for 5 minutes, then drizzle generously with the warm hot honey.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
Notes
Store leftover pinwheels in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for a few minutes to restore their crispy edges and gooey cheese.
