While the term Christmas Crack Pretzel Bark is modern, the concept of covering a salty carbohydrate with toffee and chocolate has a surprisingly long and fascinating history. The precursor to this recipe is famously known as Saltine Cracker Toffee or Saltine Cracker Bark.
Ingredients

3 cups mini pretzels (twists or snaps)

1 cup unsalted butter

1 cup brown sugar, packed

2 cups chocolate chips (milk, semi-sweet, or mix)

½ cup red & green M&M’s or holiday sprinkles

Optional: crushed candy canes or chopped nuts
Instructions

Prep

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.

Spread pretzels evenly in a single layer.

Make the toffee

In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat.

Bring to a gentle boil, stirring constantly.

Boil 2–3 minutes until thick and smooth.

Bake

Pour hot toffee evenly over pretzels.

Bake for 5 minutes until bubbly.

Add chocolate

Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the top.

Let sit 2 minutes, then spread into an even layer.

Decorate

Sprinkle with M&M’s, candy canes, or nuts.

Gently press toppings into the melted chocolate.

Set & break

Let cool completely at room temp or refrigerate.

Break into pieces and serve.
