Classic Southern Banana Pudding with Nilla Wafers

Classic Southern Banana Pudding with Nilla Wafers

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This popular copycat Chick-fil-A sauce recipe is an easy cold dipping condiment. It blends rich mayonnaise with liquid honey. Two styles of mustard join sweet barbecue sauce to complete the blend.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pudding

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Layers

  • 1 box (11 oz) Nilla Wafers
  • 45 ripe but firm bananas, sliced
  • 2 cups whipped cream or whipped topping

Instructions

  • Make the pudding: In a saucepan, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Slowly whisk about 1 cup of the warm milk mixture into the yolks to temper them.
  • Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the pudding thickens and gently bubbles, about 8–10 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract. Allow the pudding to cool slightly.
  • Assemble: Arrange a layer of Nilla Wafers in the bottom of a serving dish. Add a layer of sliced bananas, followed by a layer of warm pudding.
  • Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used, finishing with pudding.
  • Top and chill: Spread whipped cream over the top. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  • Garnish with a few extra Nilla Wafers and banana slices just before serving.

Notes

For the best Southern-style banana pudding, use ripe but firm bananas and allow the dessert to chill overnight. Add the fresh banana slices and extra wafers on top just before serving for the best texture and appearance.
