Cranberry Relish with Citrus Zest

Cranberry Relish with Citrus Zest

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 10 minutes (plus 30 minutes chilling)
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

At its heart, Cranberry Relish with Citrus Zest is a uncooked, finely chopped fruit condiment that balances natural tartness with subtle sweetness. Fresh whole cranberries undergo a quick pulsed chopping process in a food processor alongside whole oranges, fresh citrus peel, and white sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 340 g (12 oz) fresh cranberries, rinsed and drained

  • 1 medium orange, washed and cut into chunks, seeds removed

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, adjusted to taste

  • 1 tsp finely grated orange zest

  • 1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest

  • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice

  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

  • A tiny pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Prepare the cranberries: Rinse the cranberries thoroughly and remove any soft or damaged berries. Drain well.
2. Prepare the orange: Wash the orange, remove any seeds, and cut it into small chunks. Keep some of the peel if you enjoy a stronger citrus flavor.
3. Chop the ingredients: Add the cranberries and orange chunks to a food processor. Pulse several times until finely chopped but still slightly textured. Avoid blending into a smooth puree.
4. Add the flavorings: Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Stir in the sugar, orange zest, lemon zest, orange juice, cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of salt.
5. Adjust the sweetness: Taste the relish and add more sugar if needed. The mixture should have a refreshing balance of tartness and sweetness.
6. Chill the relish: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend. The relish tastes even better after a few hours in the refrigerator.
7. Serve: Spoon into a serving bowl and garnish with a little extra citrus zest before serving.

Notes

Store the relish in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days. Use a clean spoon when serving, and discard it if you notice any unusual smell, appearance, or mold.
