Denver Omelet

How to Make a Classic Denver Omelet

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 18 minutes
  • Yield: 1 serving 1x

Description

A Denver omelet is a classic American diner creation. Beaten eggs form a soft outer layer. Inside, you find a warm filling of diced ham, sweet onions, and crisp bell peppers. Sharp melted cheddar cheese binds everything together. Traditional French versions remain pale and soft. This hearty Western counterpart cooks until light golden brown on the outside. The center stays wonderfully tender.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup diced cooked ham
  • 2 tbsp finely diced onion
  • 2 tbsp diced green bell pepper
  • 2 tbsp diced red bell pepper
  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or chives, optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the eggs:
Whisk the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper in a bowl until well combined.
  • Cook the filling:
Heat 1 tbsp butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and bell peppers. Sauté for 2–3 minutes until slightly softened. Add the diced ham and cook for another minute. Transfer the filling to a plate.
  • Cook the omelet:
Add the remaining butter to the skillet. Pour in the beaten eggs and gently tilt the pan so the eggs spread evenly. Cook for about 1–2 minutes, until the edges are set and the center is slightly soft.
  • Add the filling:
Sprinkle the cheese over one half of the omelet. Add the cooked ham, onions, and peppers on top.
  • Fold and finish:
Carefully fold the omelet in half. Cook for another 30–60 seconds, allowing the cheese to melt.
  • Serve:
Slide the omelet onto a plate and garnish with fresh parsley or chives. Serve immediately with toast, hash browns, or fresh fruit.

Notes

For a halal version, use halal-certified beef or turkey ham instead of pork ham.
