Description
At its core, this appetizer is a bite-sized baked pastry that highlights the timeless pairing of tangy dairy and sweet fruit. By using a base of laminated dough, each small square expands into a light, airy shell with multiple buttery layers. Nestled right in the center of this golden vessel is a spoonful of rich fig preserves topped with soft crumbled chèvre.
Ingredients
-
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
-
120 g (4 oz) soft goat cheese
-
⅓ cup fig jam
-
1 tbsp honey (optional)
-
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
-
1 tbsp chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
-
1 egg, beaten, for egg wash
-
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
-
A pinch of flaky sea salt (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven. Heat to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2. Prepare the pastry. Unfold the thawed puff pastry and cut into 12 equal squares. Place them on the prepared tray. Lightly score a small border inside each square without cutting all the way through.
3. Add the filling. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of fig jam into the center of each square. Crumble or spread a small amount of goat cheese over the jam.
4. Brush with egg wash. Lightly brush the pastry edges with beaten egg to help them turn golden and crisp.
5. Bake. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the cheese is lightly softened.
6. Garnish. Drizzle with honey if desired. Sprinkle with fresh thyme, chopped nuts, black pepper, and a little flaky sea salt.
7. Serve. Let cool for 3–5 minutes before serving warm.
Notes
Serve these tartlets alongside a cheese board, fresh grapes, toasted nuts, and a simple green salad for an elegant appetizer spread.
