Halal Cart Crunchwrap Supreme

Ultimate Halal Cart Crunchwrap Supreme Recipe: The Best Fusion Street Food

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 crunchwraps 1x

Description

To understand this brilliant fusion dish, you have to look at the two distinct comfort foods that inspired it. The foundational flavors come directly from the street food culture popularized by Muslim vendors in major metropolitan areas. These carts traditionally serve affordable, deeply flavorful platters of marinated meat over seasoned rice, topped with crisp salad and a highly guarded secret white sauce. It is savory, slightly sweet, tangy, and occasionally fiery if you opt for the red hot sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

For the chicken

  • 500 g boneless chicken thighs, sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

For the rice

  • 2 cups cooked yellow rice or seasoned basmati rice

For the white sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Pinch of black pepper

For assembly

  • 4 large flour tortillas
  • 4 small tortillas or tostadas
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Shredded cheese
  • Hot sauce (optional)
  • Butter or oil for toasting

Instructions

  • Cook the chicken
Toss chicken with olive oil and spices. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat until golden and fully cooked.
  • Make the white sauce
Whisk together mayonnaise, yogurt, lemon juice, sugar, garlic powder, and pepper until smooth.
  • Assemble the crunchwraps
Lay a large tortilla flat. Add rice, chicken, white sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheese in the center. Top with a small tortilla or tostada.
  • Fold and seal
Fold the edges of the large tortilla inward to form a sealed wrap.
  • Toast
Place seam-side down in a hot skillet with a little butter or oil. Cook until golden and crispy on both sides.
  • Serve hot
Slice in half and drizzle with extra white sauce or hot sauce.
