Description
A halal chicken yakisoba represents a permissible adaptation of classic Japanese noodles. The original Japanese word translates directly to fried buckwheat noodles. Modern recipes actually rely almost entirely on wheat-based ramen strands. Chewy noodles mix alongside juicy sliced meat, crisp cabbage, and carrots. A complex sauce adds balanced savory notes to the dish.
Ingredients
For the Yakisoba:
- 8 oz (225 g) yakisoba noodles or fresh stir-fry noodles
- 250 g halal boneless chicken thighs or breast, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded cabbage
- ½ bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 small carrot, julienned
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
For the Sauce:
- 2 tbsp halal-certified Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce (make sure it is halal-certified)
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp honey or brown sugar
- ½ tsp sesame oil
For Garnish:
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced green onions
- Optional: Japanese mayonnaise or chili flakes
Instructions
- Make the sauce: In a small bowl, mix Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, ketchup, honey, and sesame oil. Set aside.
- Cook the chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced chicken and cook for 4–5 minutes, until cooked through and lightly browned.
- Add aromatics and vegetables: Add garlic, ginger, onion, carrot, bell pepper, and cabbage. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes, keeping the vegetables slightly crisp.
- Add the noodles: Prepare the yakisoba noodles according to the package directions. Add them to the wok and toss everything together.
- Add the sauce: Pour the sauce over the noodles and stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes, until the noodles are evenly coated and everything is hot.
- Garnish and serve: Top with green onions and sesame seeds. Add Japanese mayonnaise or chili flakes if desired.
Notes
To keep this dish halal, use halal-certified chicken and check that the Worcestershire sauce, oyster sauce, noodles, and any Japanese mayonnaise you use are halal-certified. Serve hot for the best texture and flavor.
