Halloumi Fries with Date Syrup Dip

Golden Halloumi Fries with Date Syrup Dip

Description

Understanding the magic of this dish starts with exploring the unique structural qualities of halloumi cheese itself and how it interacts with heat and sweet condiments. Unlike soft cheeses that melt into a liquid puddle when exposed to hot oil or high baking temperatures, halloumi retains a resilient structure. This characteristic allows cooks to create thick, chip-like sticks that achieve an insanely crisp outer shell while maintaining a warm, squeaky, and rich center.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Halloumi Fries:

  • 250 g halloumi cheese, cut into thick fries
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten (optional, for extra coating)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional, for a crispier texture)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for baking/air frying) or oil for frying
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

For the Date Syrup Dip:

  • 3 tablespoons date syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt or labneh
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon tahini (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Pinch of chili flakes (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the dip:
In a small bowl, mix date syrup, Greek yogurt or labneh, lemon juice, tahini, salt, and chili flakes until smooth. Set aside.
  • Coat the halloumi:
Pat the halloumi pieces dry with a paper towel. Mix flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, oregano, and black pepper in a bowl. Coat the halloumi fries evenly in the seasoned flour. For extra crunch, dip them in beaten egg and coat with breadcrumbs.
  • Cook the fries:
    • Air fryer method: Spray or brush with olive oil and air fry at 200°C (400°F) for 8–12 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and crispy.
    • Oven method: Bake at 220°C (425°F) for 15–20 minutes until crisp.
    • Frying method: Fry in hot oil for 2–3 minutes until golden brown, then drain on paper towels.
  • Serve:
Arrange the crispy halloumi fries on a plate, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve warm with the creamy date syrup dip.

Notes

Make this recipe your own by adding chili flakes for heat, fresh mint for freshness, or toasted sesame seeds for extra texture and flavor.
