Hawaiian Loco Moco Recipe: The Ultimate Island Comfort Food

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

At its core, Hawaiian loco moco is the quintessential comfort food meal of the Hawaiian Islands. It is not a delicate or complicated dish, but rather a hearty plate constructed from simple, soul-warming components stacked with care.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Burgers

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ small onion, finely diced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • 4 cups cooked white rice
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil, for frying
  • Sliced green onions, optional

Instructions

  • Make the patties: Combine ground beef, onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Divide into 4 portions and shape into patties.
  • Cook the burgers: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until cooked to your preferred doneness. Remove and set aside.
  • Make the gravy: Melt butter in the same skillet. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and garlic powder.
  • Simmer: Cook the gravy for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently, until smooth and thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Fry the eggs: In a separate skillet, fry the eggs sunny-side up until the whites are set and the yolks remain slightly runny.
  • Assemble: Place a generous portion of steamed white rice on each plate. Add a hamburger patty, spoon plenty of brown gravy over it, and top with a fried egg.
  • Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with sliced green onions if desired and serve hot.

Notes

Serve Loco Moco hot with extra brown gravy spooned over the rice and egg. For a traditional Hawaiian-style meal, pair it with a simple side salad or macaroni salad.
