Description
Maple Bourbon Glazed Ham is a roasted ham that’s been generously coated with a flavorful glaze made from pure maple syrup, brown sugar, bourbon, Dijon mustard, and aromatic spices like cinnamon and cloves. The glaze gives the ham a beautiful golden, caramelized finish while infusing it with a sweet, smoky, and slightly tangy taste. The addition of bourbon adds a layer of complexity, providing depth and warmth to the overall flavor profile. This dish is ideal for special occasions and makes for an unforgettable meal.
Ingredients
For the Ham:
-
1 fully cooked bone-in ham, about 8–10 lbs
-
½ cup water or apple cider (for roasting pan)
For the Glaze:
-
½ cup pure maple syrup
-
½ cup brown sugar
-
¼ cup bourbon
-
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
-
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon
-
¼ tsp ground cloves (optional, for warmth)
-
Pinch of black pepper
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
-
Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C).
-
Place a rack in a roasting pan and pour ½ cup water or cider into the bottom to keep the ham moist.
2. Prepare the Ham
-
Remove any tough outer skin, leaving a thin layer of fat.
-
Score the fat in a diamond pattern (about 1-inch apart) with a sharp knife.
-
This helps the glaze soak in beautifully.
3. Bake the Ham (First Stage)
-
Place the ham cut-side down on the rack.
-
Cover loosely with foil.
-
Bake for 1 hour (about 10 minutes per pound if smaller).
4. Make the Glaze
While the ham bakes:
-
Combine maple syrup, brown sugar, bourbon, mustard, vinegar, cinnamon, cloves, and pepper in a small saucepan.
-
Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
-
Cook 5–7 minutes, stirring often, until thickened and glossy.
-
Set aside to cool slightly (it will thicken more as it cools).
5. Glaze & Finish
-
After the first hour, remove foil and brush the ham generously with glaze.
-
Continue baking uncovered for another 30–45 minutes, brushing with glaze every 10–15 minutes, until the surface is caramelized and sticky.
-
If needed, you can briefly broil for 1–2 minutes at the end for a gorgeous lacquer — watch closely!
6. Rest & Serve
-
Let the ham rest 10–15 minutes before slicing.
-
Spoon extra pan drippings over slices for extra flavor.
