Sauteed Bok Choy Halal Beef Stir Fry

Sautéed Bok Choy & Halal Beef Stir-Fry

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

At its core, a sautéed bok choy and halal beef stir-fry is a balanced, high-temperature skillet dish that brings together paper-thin strips of marinated beef tenderloin or flank steak and crisp leafy greens in a rich, glossy sauce. The magic of this dish relies on contrast. You have the deep, savory warmth of halal beef, the aromatic punch of fresh ginger and garlic, and the refreshing, mineral-rich crunch of fresh bok choy.

Ingredients

Scale

For the beef

  • 450 g halal beef, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil

For the bok choy

  • 500600 g bok choy, washed and halved or chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, finely minced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil

For the stir-fry sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (use a halal-certified oyster sauce)
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce, halal-certified if used
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey or brown sugar
  • ¼ cup water or halal beef stock
  • ½ tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp cornstarch

Instructions

  • Marinate the beef
Combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and black pepper. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
  • Mix the sauce
Whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, water/stock, sesame oil, and cornstarch.
  • Sear the beef
Heat a large wok or skillet over high heat. Add 1 tbsp oil. Add the beef in a single layer and stir-fry for about 2–3 minutes, until browned. Remove the beef and set aside.
  • Sauté the aromatics
Add another tablespoon of oil. Add the onion, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 30–60 seconds until fragrant.
  • Cook the bok choy
Add the bok choy stems first and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the leafy parts and cook another 1–2 minutes, until bright green and just tender.
  • Bring everything together
Return the beef to the wok. Pour in the sauce and toss everything together for 1–2 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and vegetables.
  • Serve immediately
Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions if desired.

Notes

The beef should be halal-certified, and check the labels on oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, beef stock, and other prepared sauces, since formulations can vary.
