Description
At its core, slow cooker apple cinnamon porridge is a slow-cooked cereal. It combines oats, sweet fruit, liquid, and warm spices into a harmonious morning dish. Stovetop oatmeal requires constant stirring and quick heat. In contrast, this gentle version relies on low temperatures over several hours. This extended duration allows the natural sugars inside the fruit to caramelize gradually. The process infuses the entire pot with natural sweetness. You cannot replicate this depth in a quick five-minute microwave session.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 apples, peeled and diced
- 3 cups milk (or use 2 cups milk + 1 cup water)
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1–2 tbsp brown sugar or maple syrup
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp raisins or chopped dates (optional)
Instructions
- Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker.
- Add the oats, diced apples, milk, water, cinnamon, sweetener, vanilla, and salt.
- Stir well.
- Cover and cook on Low for 6–8 hours, until creamy and the oats are tender.
- Stir thoroughly before serving. Add a splash of warm milk if it’s too thick.
Notes
For overnight cooking, use steel-cut oats rather than quick or instant oats—they hold their texture much better.
