Tater Tot Hotdish

Tater Tot Hotdish

  • Author: David Andersson
  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

At its core, tater tot hotdish is a hearty baked casserole made of a savory meat base, tender vegetables, a rich cream sauce, and a crispy potato topping. While much of the country uses the word casserole, locals in Minnesota, North Dakota, and surrounding states affectionately refer to these built-in one-dish meals as hotdish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz / 298 g) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk
  • 1 cup (150 g) frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 bag (32 oz / 900 g) frozen tater tots
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil, if needed

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the beef:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and diced onion. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the beef, until browned and the onion is softened. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Drain excess grease.
  • Make the filling:
Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until well combined. Fold in the frozen mixed vegetables.
  • Add the cheese:
Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese until incorporated.
  • Assemble:
Transfer the beef mixture to a greased 9 × 13-inch (23 × 33 cm) baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the top.
  • Add the tater tots:
Arrange the frozen tater tots in an even layer over the cheese.
  • Bake:
Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  • Rest and serve:
Let the hotdish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
