  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

To fully appreciate this confection, it helps to understand what sets it apart from a standard chocolate cupcake or traditional brownie. A classic sheet cake is intentionally baked thin, allowing for a unique ratio where every single bite features an equal amount of tender, moist cake and rich, melt-in-your-mouth topping. By translating this concept into bite-sized squares, you create an incredibly convenient dessert that requires no forks, plates, or messy cutting at a busy party.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Flaky sea salt

Instructions

1. Prepare the Oven

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease or line a 9×9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

2. Make the Cake Batter

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.

  3. Pour the warm chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
  4. Add the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.

3. Bake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool for about 10 minutes.

4. Make the Glossy Fudge Icing

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the cocoa powder and milk until smooth.
  3. Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt until glossy and lump-free.

5. Assemble

  • Pour the warm icing evenly over the slightly warm cake.
  • Let the icing set for 20–30 minutes.
  • Lift the cake from the pan and cut into 24 bite-sized squares.
